Regardless of a student's background, he or she should have access in the classroom to a world of opportunities in learning. As teachers, it is important to assess students in a way that reflects their knowledge, comprehension, and understanding of a concept. Because I am currently working with over 60 students with 60+ different learning needs, I try to make assessment as individual as possible. In daily lessons and in assessment, variation is key. Allowing students to display their knowledge in many different ways, while using learning tools like computers, butcher paper, color coordinated support, songs, physical engagement, and drawing allows all students to access the material.
Below you will find an example of a project used during a unit on To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, as well an example of a rubric used to assess projects.
